Sign No. 3,497,263 of the Internet’s encroaching role in popular culture: Driving back from Louisiana Monday, I came across Shreveport radio station KBED at 102.9 FM. But during station breaks, instead of calling themselves “one oh two point nine,” they called themselves “one oh two dot nine.” Dot. As in dot-com or dot-org.
Sign No. 1,647,748 of how far the Internet still has to go: The radio station in question doesn’t have a web site.

Actually, I’ve already seen that happen right here in Large D. About five years ago I met a fellow comic who also worked for a local soul station, I think it was 105.7, but whenever I said it as “point seven”, he corrected me to “DOT seven” — “just like the Internet”, he said. He wanted a mention of the station in his intro, and I had to remember to say the DOT …
Back in about ’97-’98, we had a station in Detroit (105.1) that did that. VERY few people got it, as the web was not nearly so ubiquitous at that point. I had several of my friends say while driving “I don’t get what that ‘dot’ thing means”, and then I’d have to explain it to them.
Speaking of… I really miss “The Edge”.
