This was a fascinating read for me last night, Josh. I had no idea this even went on (Wichita State not requiring such an interview and all).
Also, good lead. An interviewing question: How did that tidbit come up? Happenstance, or did you just ask for examples? The interviewing process has had me intrigued lately.
Awww, you’re too nice!
I had to go digging for that anecdote. I asked everyone I interviewed for applicants they’d talked to where the interview made a big difference one way or the other.
Actually, the only difficult thing about reporting the story was avoiding personal conflicts. I interview for Yale, so I didn’t want to talk to any Yale interviewers (the one Yale applicant I did talk to I found via Duke). And Sudeep in business is in charge of Brown’s interviews. Various other DMNers do it for Penn, Princeton, Harvard, etc.
They do it in California too. I applied for early admission at Sac State (my safety school) and actually got to see them look at my papers for a whopping five minutes before admitting me. I felt so proud of myself in those five minutes 😛
