Just fired off an email to Belo suggesting they compensate sites that send visitors to them.
Also why did Belo make such a big deal out of this. Blocking URLs by referrer is a piece of cake. They could just have silently redirected links from barkingdogs.org to their front page.
I’m amazed at all the companies with websites that have missed the point. It seems as if Belo is now one of them.

I thought this issue was more or less resolved with the Ticketmaster decision. Not that the Ticketmaster decision was binding on everybody. Just that the reasons seemed pretty darn sound.
Besides, reporters are sorely undercompensated; the newspapers get all rights to their journalists’ articles for a song. The least a paper can do is allow the public to recognize excellent reporting by visiting quality and groundbreaking stories directly.
That said, the NY Times solves this issue by disallowing visits by unregistered users. Rumor has it that subscribers ultimately will have to pay to access the site.
