Travis Morrison is pissed that the Vines appear to have stolen his video. I doubt it’s legally actionable, but he does sort of have a point: the Dismemberment Plan original, the Vines copy.
I say this as someone who tries my best to musically all-embracing, someone who can find much to like in even the most commercial music: The Vines suck ass. So much vacant posturing, so little talent. Just watch that video and tell me you don’t have the urge to kick the lead singer’s ass.
I’m going to do a quickie TXCN appearance, then I’m off to Austin. If all goes according to plan, I’ll have a long (and pretty interesting) story on Sunday’s front page, so watch for it.

Speaking of all-embracing, I was wondering what your (and by “your”, I mean Josh and other readers/indie listeners) opinions were on mainstream rap. I’ve noticed sites like pitchfork and tinymixtapes giving more props to the mainstream and I have been listening to more of that recently as well (but I guess I liked rap before I had even heard of anything else so I don’t really count). Just look at the top 50 singles of 2003 on Pitchfork. I can’t say I would disagree with most of their selections. Sure there are way too many artists out there I can’t stand, but “mtv rap” is definately better now than it was a few years ago. I have been feeling The Black Album, Kanye West, Missy, Cee-lo and Outkast, of course. I could go on and on about this, especially about the term mainstream (Blackalicious, J5 and Kweli are major labelers, but are they mainstream?) and the difference between underground and that, but let me know what you think. I love hearing about this stuff and I was curious what you indie scholars out there have to say.
