to mexico

I guess I haven’t mentioned it here yet, but crabwalk.com will be going global in 18 short days.
Well, hemispherical. Or at least continental.
From January 22 to February 19, I will be in Morelia, Mexico. I’ll be trying my durnedest to learn Spanish at the Baden-Powell Institute, which to my knowledge was not founded by the man who started the Boy Scouts and often did spywork among the Zulu while disguised as a butterfly collector. (Of course, he was also a pedophile who dug Hitler and tried affiliating with Hitler Youth groups. But never mind that.)
No plans to shutter crabwalk while I’m gone or anything, don’t worry. But I may throw in a little espanol for fun now and then.
And for anyone who’s been to Mexico (or, more doubtful, Morelia): Any advice? The sum of my Mexico experience consists of a couple hours in Juarez one night in 2002.

  1. Drink a lot of Coke. Mexican Coke is a million times better than our’s (no idea why, it just is), and much much safer than the water.
If you can find it (I’m used to Sonora, and have never really heard of Morelia), get carnitas. You won’t be sorry. Best edible substance on the planet.

  2. That’s good advice. (The Coke. Not sure about the geese. The geese sound inviting. More inviting at least than the spelling of Cuauhtemoc.)
I bet the reason their Coke is better is that they use cane sugar instead of our corn syrup. That’s why the Dr Pepper you get at the Dr Pepper plant in central Texas is so much better than your store-bought variety — the cane sugar.

  3. Of course, avoid drinking, say, a whole glass of tap water while you’re there. But chewable Pepto-Bismols will take the worry out of a small swallow or inadvertently taking in water (i.e. through fruit, forgetting you’re in Mexico and opening your mouth in the shower). Two tablets three times a day. Your tongue will turn black, but no Mexican tummy trouble.
Try to make it to Playa Augustinillo in the Puerto Angel area, if you have a little time. Take a bus from Oaxaca. 50 cents gets you a hammock on the beach for a night!

  4. Or! If you don’t have time for the Puerto Angel trek, take a boat down the canals in Xochimilco. It’s about 20 km south of Mexico City. Weekends are energetic — huge families eating lunch on the barcos, mariachi. Or it’s slow and quiet during the week, if you need to relax. Your travel guide should have more info.

  5. Take lots of pix to post and have fun!
Mexico is a beautiful country; don’t believe people who might say anything derogatory about it being a 3rd world country and dirty. They’ve probably only been to TJ or Juarez.

  6. I’m sure you’re right about the cane sugar in the soft drinks. When I was in Mexico some years back, I was surprised to see Fresca in a vending machine. Bought it, took a big swig–it was NOT diet. Here in the states it’s only sugar-free. It was kinda good though.
