mcmartin preschool

A McMartin preschooler confesses to making up abuse allegations. I’m glad a person like Debbie Nathan is out there to debunk those silly 1980s Satanic day-care abuse scandals. So many lives ruined over nothing. More here. I have a basic rule: The moment anyone mentions a “Satanic” element to anything, I immediately stop believing it. I remember my grandmother telling me when I was about eight that she’d heard at a PTA meeting that Abbeville, two towns over from my home, was the global center of Satanic cult activity. She even had some sort of mimeographed brochure showing the “symbols” one should look for to prove your child is a Satanist. Yeah, and I’m Anton Levey. More on the McMartin case.

  1. About 10 years ago, one of the then-renters across the street from my house came over freaked out — her house had been broken into. It was dark and winter. We called the cops. The policeman who arrived looked around, and found a small manila envelope, a couple inches long, torn in half. The renter said that it must have contained her wisdom teeth. She’d tucked them into her jewel box years before, and the speculation was that the thief was looking for valuables. He also took some of her underwear.
The cop said, you know, he took the teeth to use in Satanic rituals. I’m reading a book on it right now. We wondered if we should be more freaked out by the cop than the break in. This is urban Seattle we’re in.
They caught the thief later that night. He was after panties, not teeth or valuables.
